Vertical Toolbar Option + No Ribbon?

If there is one item that is the bane of my existence in Microsoft
Office 2007 it is the introduction of that awful ribbon. I'm sure this
would be a reasonably good idea for large monitors but when you're
using a laptop from 12-15" as most are, and in widescreen mode as many
are, the most valuable part of screen real estate is your vertical
space. Thus you would prefer to use the space on the sides of the
screen instead of the top. I LOVED to move those little icon bars from
Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office applications to the sides of
the document, since it was unused. Now with that awful ribbon, which
is twice as thick as any toolbar, it takes up a chunk of your vertical
space. I can see no way to drag a ribbon to the side or create those
little "quick action" button icons like for indenting, page break etc.

What is even worse? I have to hide the ribbon to save screen real
estate on my laptop and I find that the number of clicks and time to
do something simple (e.g. page break, head/footer edit) is easily
twice as long as it was prior. While there are some big improvements,
I am hoping that someone used Word on a laptop and there is a way to
either get rid of the ribbon and use the old menu/toolbar system or I
can just go back to simple drop down menus that were efficient and
generally, if well categorized, you could easily locate where options
were placed.

Thanks for the assistance in advance.

After trying the 2003 version, I think I'll give that idea a miss and go
back to my old faithful MS Office Pro Millennium instead.

I'm still using Office 97. I never upgraded to 2000, so I don't know
if it is any better than 97. My wife has Office2003 on her computer, I
don't like it at all. I guess I'm stuck with 97 unless I can find 2000
on Ebay or something.
