Very new, very confused. Amounts over $999 turn into #####

Hello to all -
I am a complete novice at Excel and all my knowledge comes
from reading a book and trying it.
I am trying to work with what I thought was a simple
spreadsheet of expenses. All was good for about 6 months of data &
then the totals cell for the month I was using turned to "####" when
the amount climbed over $999. The next month didn't. THe previous ones
didn't. Then the following did. Now, in the middle of the sheet where
I have a category subtotaled is doing the same thing. I checked to see
if it would happen on all (well, most) the other subtotal cells if
they got about $999, and no - they worked fine.
The cell will total the information, but will not display it.
Only that crosshatch.
Any help, ideas?
Using Excel 2000, WinXP. Oh, and I tried OpenOffice to see if
it was some sort of weird 2000/XP problem, and the same thing happens
but not on all the cells.
Thanks!

Sam

That was all it took. Unreal. I spent hours trying to figure
out what I was missing. Oh well. ;-)
Many thanks to both you and Bill for the help.
Let's hope all our problems are that easy to fix!
