hi
i have been asked to make sure links on a site have made are 'vetted' >>
'have all external links been vetted for possible inappropriate materials
within the linked sites?'
supposedly, dreamweaver accomplishes this
does frontpage?
and if it does not, is there a simple script i can use?

Dreamweaver has no way of knowing what is "appropriate", just the same as
FP. The only way to vet the links would be to go to them yourself.

No - Dreamweaver (or any other program) can't do this. The best a computer
can do is look for "bad words" on a page - it can't judge if a page is
offensive. You'll need to visit the sites yourself and check. You should be
able to discliam yourself by putting something to the effect of we're not
responsible for the content of external links on your site. Who's asking you
to "vet" these links and why?

i am a teacher ... and have made the school web site [years ago]
now there are guidelines to which we must adhere
the board requires that we 'vet' the links on our site
seems a labour intesive task if we have say...15+ links [we had over 100...i
have simply removed them now]
perhaps they are encouraging us to NOT use external links on our sites

it's funny...our media services dept. gave me this reply to the question,
'how do you make a link vetted? just by checking? or is there some kind of
script to do this?' >>> There is 3rd party software to do this kind of
thing, or you can download the site back into Dreamweaver and ask it to
validate the links.

ha...but arg really :)

thanks, murry & jon

Validating a link, just check to see if the link is valid/active, it doesn't check the actual
content of the page or site. FP can also valid links

does your computer network then have things like "netnanny" or something that can
work in conjunction with say a firewall to block inappropriate sites?

The thing with dreamweaver, by "validate the links" all that means is the URL
actually goes to a site, it won't tell you this is "G" rated or "X" rated, if
that is indeed what you're asking.

hi
thanks thomas & andrew
yes, i guess i was just confirming that my media services people were giving
me the incorrect information
i can't guarantee if all the people who visit the site will go their with
netnanny or firewalls installed
i will just leave off links...

Yeah - they are confusing CHECKING a link, with VETTING a link. They are
two different things.

Besides, Dreamweaver cannot CHECK links that are external to your site....

Validating a link is not at all the same thing as vetting a linked site for
content. You media services people seem to be rather dim bulbs.

i was hoping to get a job there <g>
then you can call me a dim-bulb, too :)
it is upsetting that this is the kind of information you receive from the
people that are supposed to 'know'
they set out these stipulations...and yet don't have staff to help you get
your website going
frustrating
thanks, everyone for your help!!
