Hi All, I just installed Office XP on a dual boot Windows 98SE/Windows 2000
SP4 machine. All fine on Win2000, but on Win98SE after the initial "updating
network components" install and reboot, which was fine, after the main
install, on reboot I got an BSOD error message "VFAT Device Initialization
Failed. A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is
unavailable. VFAT cannot continue loading. System halted." I can boot the
system in safe mode, but only in normal mode if I disable my ethernet adaper
in safe mode first. It's something to do with netwoking, as if I skip the
ndis.vxd file on boot it boots in normal mode too. If I boot with the
ethernet adapter disabled, and then enable it, it works fine! I have to
remember to disable it again before shutting down though. I have uninstalled
and reinstalled it using the latest drivers several times to no avail. I
think that the "updating network components" routine has done something to my
registry and/or system files to cause this. Has anyone any ideas, as I'm fast
running out of them?! I have checked the MS Knowlege base, and non of the
solutions there apply, all is OK. Does anyone know what the "updating network
components" routine on the Office XP installer actually does?
Office XP works fine BTW!
Thanks in advance. Cheers, Dave.
