video display problem - old pasted graphic shows up

Hi,

When I use Word in the Print Layout view, I often can't
see the paragraph I'm typing as there is an old clipart
or graphic (distorted) covering the print. If I switch
to normal view, it's gone and not a problem. It doesn't
show up if I print, but I like to work in Print Layout
view to see margins.

I am using Office 2000 on Windows ME. I have tried
updating video drivers (I think I did it correctly).

Hi,

I actually have the same normal.dot template at work and
at home (copied it) and I don't have the problem at work
on my XP computer. This seems to be a problem at home
with my ME computer. Could it be something with the
video drive?

Frankly I cannot see why a video driver should manufacture old images in
Word. Did you actually try what was suggested? If you did and the problem is
fixed, recopy the template from work and import the styles etc from it to
the new one that Word creates on the home machine.

This really is a bizarre problem. Could it be something
with the normal.dot/template if let's say I load a
document and some of the text is obscured by a distorted
copy/paste graphic I used earlier that day. Then, the
next time I load the same file ... it may be obscured by a
different copy/paste distorted graphic that I used more
recently. It isn't a watermark and it isn't a clear
image ... it's a distorted graphic that I previously used
or viewed somewhere.

Thanks for trying to help me with this very annoying
problem!

This still sounds like a corrupt template. Have you tried renaming it yet?

Hi Graham,

How do I rename the template? Oh ... and if I have
customized it quite a bit with macros ... I assume I will
have to input that again? Thanks for your help with this
very annoying problem.

For instructions on renaming Normal.dot, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm. You should not
have to recreate all your customizations. AutoText entries, macros, custom
toolbars (those you've created yourself from scratch), and custom/customized
styles can be retrieved from the renamed Normal.dot using the Organizer.
Unfortunately, toolbar customizations and keyboard shortcuts can't be
salvaged and will have to be recreated.

Hi,

If this doesn't fix (I have seriously customized the
toolbar and entered quite a few keyboard macro
shortcuts), can I return to my old normal?

Hi,

Okay ... so I renamed my normal.dot file to normal.old
and made sure that there were no other "normal" files
loading ... and then tried to open a file in Word. The
files continue to have this graphic shadow which makes it
impossible to read some paragraphs. I know it was
loading a new normal.dot file because my customizations
were gone. Please help me with this, if you can. What
else can I try?

This really is bizarre :(
You can delete the new normal.dot and rename your old one back again to
normal.dot as this apparently isn't the problem. Frankly I cannot imagine
where else this corruption would come from.

Yes, just rename it back to Normal.dot (after deleting the new one Word
created), and you'll be back where you started.

Since I joined this thread in the middle, I was completely unaware of your
initial problem which is indeed quite bizarre. If starting with winword /a
and renaming Normal.dot don't have any effect, then clearly this is not a
Word problem at all. It *must* be something to do with the display driver.
What type of display are you using (CRT, LCD)?
