Video import formats for PowerPoint

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I can import a SWF file on a PC, but am unable to find a way to on the Mac version PowerPoint. Is it possible?

It appears to be the only way I can get videos to play in PowerPoint on both Macs & PCs or is there a video format that will work that I can create on the Mac?

I've tried mov, mp4 and flv without success. I don't have anything that will convert to avi (if that's the solution) and if it is, is there any shareware that will convert to this format for the Mac?

Discovered that mpeg format works used Movavi converter to translate from mp4.

A lot depends upon which versions of PowerPoint you're using. The best
choices are:

For PowerPoint versions 2008 and earlier:
..avi (uncompressed)
..wmv (with the free Flip4Mac QuickTime codec installed on Macs)

For PowerPoint 2008 and 2010:
both of the above, plus .mov and .mp4 because Office 2010 now supports
these formats.

I would add that with .wmv playback on the Mac via Flip4Mac, the audio is slightly out of sync with the video. FYI.

Thanks for the response guys,

Though I am using Office 2008, I need to create presentations that play on all versions of the app on both Macs and PCs, and I can't rely on other Mac users being able to play wmv, or PC users to be able play mov files. As I mentioned above, my answer has been mpeg files.

Now I just need to figure out what formats a good for the web that will also play on iPods and iPads seeing those platforms don't support Flash.

Hi

Uncompressed .avi plays on both Mac and PC PowerPoint without any
additional software required.

iPods, iPads, and iPod Touch are happy with .3gp format (one of the
Export options in QuickTime Pro)
