Video not playing in PowerPoint

I need some assistance. All of a sudden my videos
(mpegs) will not play in PowerPoint. I get a Oxc0000005
error and PowerPoint will shut down. I am on XP with
office 2003. I tried playing the same videos in the
mplayer32 and they will not play there either. I have
checked my MCI settings against the recommendations at
http://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/ppmultimedia2.
html.

I have also downloaded the AVI codec freeware and took a
look at all of my Codecs. It appears I have what I need
but I could be mis reading it.

My co-worker has also lost the capability on three
different machines and the only thing we can link it to
is possible window updates.

I am open to any ideas and suggestions on how to
troubleshoot this problem.
