'View A Project' details

D

Dave Munz

I am unable to see any details or task information when
I 'View a project' under the Project menu of Project
Server.

Even when I log in as a user who is a member of all
groups, who can access any category, and has full
permissions I still don't see anything.

Under the Project menu I see the project that I have
published but when I click on that project link all I get
under 'View a project' is "There is no information to
display in this view" regardless of what view I choose.

From Project Pro I publish all information and publish the
project plan. When I publish the project plan I publish
all of it and not just the summary.

When the update goes through Project Spooler there are no
spooler errors.

The plan I publish has tasks in it, with assigned
resources, work, durations, and predecessors.

I would really appreciate any help that anyone can give to
to help me solve this puzzling mystery.

Thank you, Dave

Dave:

What errors are you seeing the application event log on the server?

matt s.

This is a VERY common problem with Project Server, and majority of the
cause is blamed with installing the IIS Lockdown tool and URLScan.
Installing this utilities and configuring them by default will BREAK Project
Server. There are articles that address this, if this is the case.

But generally the reason why this is happening is because the publish
process is not populating all the correct tables in the Project Server backend,
mainly our MSP_WEB tables.

You can try republishing the project plan again, and when complete make
sure you close down the plan completely and see if the information gets
pushed over. When republishing, try doing a Collaberate, Publish New and
Change Assignments, and make sure you Overwrite Actuals also.

Another thing to attempt is making sure we have the current versions of
MDAC installed on the client and server side.

Another cause is something might be wrong with the publishing aspect of
project server. During a publish you might want to make sure the publish is
working correctly. During this process Project creates an XML file on the
Project Server machine and places it into a folder called ViewDrop, this is
where all the data gets processed and pushed over to the Project Server
database. You might want to check if an XML file gets generated, if not then
you've got some problems with some Project Server related services. But if
this is a small size project then the XML might get processed quickly. This
is typically something you want to test with a member of yout IT team or
something.

Make sure you're not getting any spooler errors from the Project Server
spooler.

And does this happen to all Project Plans contained in the database? What
happens if you create a brand new plan and publish it, do we still see the
problem?

Hope this helps.

Gary,

When I look at the event log (good idea BTW) I see the
following :

Component: PCSViews
File: ViewsDrop.cls
Line: -1
Error Number: 0x8000401a
Description: Automation error
The server process could not be started because the
configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and
password.

This doesn't mean a whole lot but I have made sure of the
following :
- all my settings, on both Pro and Server, are set to use
Project authentication
- the username/password I use when I log onto Pro with a
cfg'd connection to the server is a valid
username/password combination
- the above mentioned username has full permissions to
everything under Server
- the directory structure for Server, including Viewdrop,
is set to : Administrators Full Control, Authenticated
Users Full Control, Everyone with the following
permissions - Modify, Ready & Execute, List Folder
Contents, Read, and Write, Internet Guest Account Full
Control, System Full Control
- I get no Spooler errors reported

For each one of these errors reported there is also a
warning published :

"Component: Views Notification Service
File: C:\Proj10\pcportal\source\viewsnotify\ViewNotify.cpp
Line: 233
Error Number: 0x8000401a
Description: Failed to create instance of views scheduling
component

to run, shutting down.

I'm assuming that once I can make the reported error
disappear, so will the warning.

Thank you for any light, pointers, help, or direction, you
can provide on this mystery.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave:

1) Make sure that you're running the latest version of MDAC on your server
and your clients v 2.8
2) Make sure that IP Restrictions on msdacs.dll in the MDAC directory is set
to granted
3) At face value, the error indicates that the identity which the Views
Notification Service is running under is failing. In the task manager or
services object snap-in, take a look at the identity that the Views
Notification Service is running under and verify it's status and password if
it's not the system account.

Let us know what you find.

First, I have to say thank you for your continued help.

Here's what I've done :
1) Downloaded and installed v2.8 of MDAC on both the
server and client side. Didn't even bother to check what
I had before, just re-installed.

2) Couldn't find a msdacs.dll on the server but found a
msadcs.dll under the MSADC directory in IIS manager. If
this is the one you were referring to it does have the IP
access rights granted.

3) Looking at the properties of the 'Microsoft Project
Views Notifcation Service' under the Services tool of the
server, it gives the Log on as : Local System Account.

After checking all 3 of these (only the MDACv2.8 download
was a change) the result is still the same.

I tried changing the Views Notification Service log on to
a recognised system account, such as the admin, but this
didn't alter anything.

I know it it a little unfair to ask, "So what is my
problem", especially as you don't know my system, however
any more pointers you can offer will be very much
appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave:

Are you in a domain environment using Windows Auth? If not, try giving
Everyone Full Control on the ViewDrop folder.

D

Dave

Thanks Gary.

I'm not under domain control. I did try giving everyone
full control. Still no luck :-<.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Dave:

Are you working on a workstation or on the server? What happens if you do
the same thing logged onto the server?

D

Dave

Hmmm, good question. Actually I'm working on a work
station. Let me try it on the server...

....Well I just went and installed Project Pro on the
server and ran it. I saved the project plan and published
all the information. When I checked the event log I got
the same errors as before and couldn't see the published
project details.

I really appreciate your continued suggestions in this
matter.
