We generate documentation in Microsoft Word 2002, and have been receiving
feedback that cross-references have been wrong. Experimenting, I think I
have discovered the problem; if you are viewing all formatting and hidden
text (for example, index entries), as we often do
(Tools->Options->View->All).
When the document is selected and "Update Field" is performed to all
cross-references, the new cross-reference that are generated seem to regard
the hidden text as real. Therefore, when you then turn off the hidden text
(or generate a PDF file which of course doesn't display the hidden text,
then the cross-references are now wrong.
Is this assumption valid? Is this a known issue in Word? Is the only
workaround to make sure than when cross-references are updated, that View
All is turned off?
Thanks,
P.
