virus checking in email....

Christine

I might have suspicions that my e-mail is infected. Seems same mail is being
returned to me from people I have no clue who they are . Anyways what I need
to know is where do I go to have the mail scanned ? My antivirus program
says ingoing and outgoing mail scan is on . If so then why am I having these
problems. I did a total scan of hard drives but I don't know if it scans
email. Thank You.

This is a normal phenomenon, not a problem. Because of the way spam and
viruses work, messages are most likely being sent with your address spoofed
to people you don't know. Your address could have been harvested from any
number of places -- like the machine of anyone you've ever corresponded
with. Because some of those are going out to invalid addresses, you get the
bounces.

As long as you have good anti-virus protection in place, you should be fine.

It's possible that someone who has you in their mailing list was infected
and your email address is being spoofed.

Most likely you're not the one infected, but someone who has your name in
their address book. Many current viruses scan the infected system for
addresses and then use those addresses as the sending address (called
spoofing) when they try to propagate. If the receiving mail system can't
deliver the message, it sends a bounce back to what it believes to be the
sending address: yours, even though you didn't send the message.
