virus or patch

i received this e-mail from Microsoft, telling me that I should download a
patch for security reason. Is this a virus or for real?
Please help.

Microsoft does not sent patches or programs via email. To determine if you
need to install any updates (security or otherwise), go to the official
Microsoft sites:

It is a very nasty virus. DO NOT RUN THE ATTACHMENT. If you do, your
computer will start churning out new copies of this fraudulent message
to all the EMail addresses in your address book or in your files.

Microsoft never has, and claim they never will, send patches or
security upgrades by email. The *only* place to obtain such patches is
at the Microsoft website.
