Visio 2003 Architect crashes on startup

I'm running Windows 2000, patched to the gills. I have just installed Visio
..NET Enterprise Architect 2003 that came with .NET Enterprise Architect 2003.

It has never worked. I have never been able to start Visio.

On attempting to start Visio I get a progress bar saying "Please wait
while visio updates it's directory cache" Then I get a kind of switchboard
screen titled "Choose Drawing Type" with a prompt "Click a category to browse
drawing templates." The hourglass is still displayed at this point. Then
comes the crash - I get a message box which says "Microsoft Visio has
encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience".

Not half as sorry as I am. Can anybody help?

Fixed. Nobody else seems to post solutions that the search engines can pick
up, so I'll have a go...

FWIW, I discovered that the following messages were recorded in the Event
Viewer Application Log at the time of the original crash. Source for both is
Microsoft Office 10

Event ID 1001
Fault bucket 08026660.

and

Event ID 1000
Faulting application visio.exe, version 10.0.2420.4, faulting module sg.dll,
version 10.0.2420.4, fault address 0x00036e8f.

Solution:
I thought I was fully patched. I wasn't. I didn't realise that the Office
updates (http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/ at the time of writing)
were different from windows updates. I went there, clicked on "Check for
updates", noted to my relief that there were a couple of patches pertaining
to Visio (Visio 2002, oddly enough, although my problem was with Visio 2003)
and kept patching until I could patch no more. One or two reboots later and
Visio for Enterprise Architects 2003 now loads OK for me.
