Visio 2003 opening previous format problem

Patrick

Please help. I've spend _hours_ searching for anyone else having this
problem, and turned up nothing.

Recently installed Visio 2003, then updated to all adjustments from
OfficeUpdate.

I'm trying to access drawings (500+) which were made in a previous
version of Visio. I don't know which one, but it definitely wasn't
2002.

The problem is that my 2003 will not open many of these drawings. It
seems to be random as to which ones it will open or won't, but my
failure rate is about 20-30%. There seems to be a weak correlation
between size (over 1MB) and the symptom.

No error ever appears, but the processor (P4, 1GB RAM) pegs to 100% and
sits there. I left it overnight one time. It was still pegged when I
walked in the next morning. I tried turning off virus scanning and
other security features, but can't get a bead on what might be causing
the hang.

The strangest part is that a peer with Visio 2002 can open EVERY SINGLE
DRAWING.

Summary of my troubleshooting results:
2003 can load 2002 drawings (we knew that)
2003 cannot load these other drawings (that's the symptom)
2002 can load these other drawings (that's the strange part)
When I load one of these problem drawings into 2002 and resave it, 2003
still cannot open it. (And this is really not an option for 500+
drawings.)

By all accounts this looks like a feature(bug), but I'm looking for
others who know more about Visio to help me troubleshoot this. I'm not
the only 2003 user, and we need this resolved.
