Visio hangs when opening Database Model template

I just installed Visio 2003 (on my Inspiron 4100 running Windows XP SP2) in
order to use it for a class assignment modeling databases with IDEF1X. But,
as fate would have it, the ONLY feature of Visio that won't work, is the
Database Model Diagram. As soon as I choose it from the startup wizard, Visio
begins setting up the shapes window and page area, but never displays more
than the empty frames before stopping and hanging endlessly on an
"hourglass". All other templates that I tried, but I don't need, worked
flawlessly. How can I make this one stop crashing? I tried it with and
without SP1 and it made no difference. I also tried installing the .NET
framework, with no change. Could Visual Studio be necessary in order to do
this? If so, is there are workaround, because I can't install that on my
computer. Or is there something else I need to install or fix?

I have the same problem. I don't think you need VS as I have it
installed on my computer. I haven't found a solution yet. Still
searching the internet. :-(

Just found the solution on Google Groups:

I posted a support email at Microsoft. Guess what! they
called within 10 minutes. Probably because the guy knew
what the problem was and he could get more points for a
speedy problem resolution.

He said to delete my printer. Then I could open visio
and create a database diagram. Apparently there is a
conflict between the Epson C80 series printer drivers and
visio. He says Microsoft is not going to fix this issue
and that it's an Epson thing.

Then why aren't any other microsoft products bothered?
Or any other software by any maker? And why is it just
the database model diagrams that don't work?

On a whim I reinstalled my C82 printer but didn't make it
my "default" printer. Visio still works, and I can
create Database Model Diagrams. But this is going to be
a pain to have to select the printer each time I want to
print to it.

This means I can't just hit the print button in ANY
software, just because Visio is picky. Oh boy. This is
progress.

Thank John for saving my day!
