Visio Pro. 2002 SP2 SLOW

I'm running Visio Pro. 2002 SP2 on a 2.33 GHz Intel Core2 Duo CPU with a
256MB graphics card and 2GB of RAM. The initial saves take as long as 3-4
minutes (Not Responding appears). Some subsequent changes to existing
drawings take as long to save. WHY? At the time Visio's CPU usage is 50%.
What is the software doing in the background? It was as slow on my old AMD
1700 machine as well, one of the main reasons why I upgraded. All other
programs are super fast.

Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

What kind of drawing is it - based on what template or solution? If the
drawing is based on a solution such as Database Modeling, try creating a
simple flowchart and compare.
What version of Visio was it created in? Try creating a new blank drawing,
what is the performance on save?
Where is the file being saved to/opened from? If it is saved on a network
location, compare when saving it to a local folder on the computer.

Finally - is this a drawing which has been around since previous Visio
versions? I'm wondering if there is some old 'baggage' riding around in the
drawings that you may be able to clear out.

One thing to try is to 'Round trip' the drawing from binary (.VSD) to xml
(.VDX) and back. Take one of your drawings and try the following steps.
Be sure to close Visio between the different save actions, to clear the
cached memory.

1. Launch Visio, open the drawing in question.
2. Create a new drawing using Save As to xml format (*.VDX)
3. Close Visio.
4. Launch Visio, open the drawing created in step 2.
5. Create a new drawing using Save As to binary format (*.VSD)
6. Close Visio.
7. Launch Visio, open the drawing created in step 5.
8. Test for performance within Visio, and saving.

I'll be curious to see if any of those ideas give you any relief.
Intrinsically, Visio saves should be quick, subject to the size of the file
and any add-in solution code that may be running.

I am experiencing the same or very similar problem. Visio 2002 SP2 running
on XP with a 2Gb RAM 2GHz Athlon 64. An example: Create a new blank file.
Add a rectangle. Save the file. The save takes about 8 or 9 minutes. Visio
consumes 40-95% of the CPU time and about 35-40 Mb memory. No other
applications running. Old files or newly saved files can be edited and save
very fast. Pasting a file into Word, etc. is very slow. The files are saved
and loaded from the local hard disk.

Does it take a long time to save after you type in the file name and click
on Save, or does most of the delay occur before you are able to select the
location and type the file name for the first save? I have seen problems
where the delay occurs because of the amount of existing drawings in the
default folder, which seems to create a delay in displaying / browsing
files. You might check to see if the behavior still occurs if you change
your default folder for Drawings to a local folder on the physical hard
drive instead of a network folder or redirected MyDocuments folder, for
example.
