Visio unlock shape

I have a file from a staff member that left our organization. I need to edit
the file but a shape (circle) shows up instead of the actual picture when I
try to copy it to another file. How can I remove the protection.

To remove protection from a shape right mouse click on the shape > Format >
protection, this sequence should bring up the protection dialog menu. However
I do not think this is the root cause for this behavior because even if the
shape is protected from being selected in this menu it does not prevent you
from selecting it.
