Vista/Outlook 2007 over VPN Performance

Our central site is SBS 2003 SP2 with Exchange 2003, talking to Wild web over
ADSL2.

Have a remote user using Vista/Outlook 2007 in cache mode accessing the
server via VPN.

Performance is 'orrible. Small mails with a few lines of text are OK, but
any attachments or embedded images really put the brakes on. Large
attachments over 2-3 MB basically don't come thru. Forget about synching the
mailbox . . .

All other aspects of accessing the server are OK (OWA, FTP, ripping files
to/from shares). Those files can be many MB is size and transfer in the time
we'd expect. Testing with XP/OL2003 is fine as well.

Any thoughts of where to concentrate our efforts?

TIA

Have you applied Service Pack 2 already for Office 2007?

A common cause of having slow send/receive performance is having a virus
scanner installed that integrates with Outlook. Disable/uninstall this
integration and try again.

Thanks Robert

I know he has already tried disabling AV both for just mail scanning and
altogether. No difference.

I do not know if SP2 has been applied, will suggest it and advise.

Disabling mail scanning does not remove the integration component for pretty
much any virus scanner. You'll have to uninstall it and reinstall it with
that component.
