Vista reinstalls Office Pro 2003 constantly

I have recently purchased a new laptop which came with Vista Ultimate as the
OS. For my work and for economic reasons I wish to stay with Office Pro 2003
and specifically Access 2003. Now that I have installed the 2003 Office
package, everytime I try to use any of the applications I get the Windows
installer that runs the installation and configuration constantly.
This locks up the system completely and takes ages to clear. Each time I do
some work the same thing happens.
This is obviously an incompatibility between Office Pro 2003 and Vista and
from the information posted here, it seems to be quite widespread.
Does anybody kwon of a solution and are Microsoft aware of thisproblem and
if so what are they doing about it?
Any help would be gratefully received!

Hi Peter,
Thanks for this info - I have downloaded the utility and when I ran it it
listed all of the programmes that have been installed and my reading of this
was that the highlighted items would be deleted from the hard drive and would
need to be re-installed.
I feel that if I did this I would need to reinstall all of the Windows and
Office components again - is this really any different to the Uninstall in
Programmes & Features???
Let me explain further what I have tried..
I have uninstalled Office Pro 2003 and downloaded & installed Office Pro
2007 - I get exactly the same response:
Outlook - when I receive or send an email installer runs
Word, Access, Outlook, Powerpoint etc.. on opening these apps - the
installer then the configuration tool runs.
When I use Windows Explorer to locate files etc. a double click does not
launch the app. and the app has to be launched manually the the file needs to
be opened manually. This applies to .doc / .mdb / .pps /.xls etc. etc.
It feels to me as though the applications are not written to the Registry
and this will cause the installer to run as well as the file extensions not
instigating the opening of the app.
Is there any way that I can "force" the Registry entries required for the
full Office installation?
I really appreciate your assistance and would love to get back to the
apparent simplicity of XP but we must on!!!!
Many thanks,

The clean up utility removes the files & registry entries for the Windows
Installer connected with the App you select in the dialogue box (all
Office2003 components) It doesnt remove any other component files
(Add/Remove does)
You are then able to reinstall Office2003 hopefully correcting the installer
registry problem.

However since apparently you have now downloaded/installed the Office2007
trial this may complicate things as the earlier version should be installed
first. As such I believe you would have to uninstall Office2007 first,
before attempting the repair of 2003

Hi DL,
Thank you for the explanation of the tool - I had the impression that the
files would be physically removed from the nhard disk.
I have given you the wrong impression of the current state of affairs - I
have removed 2003 completely and will work with 2007 if I can get it to stop
reinstalling and doing the things detailed earlier.
The problem has persisted with 2007 that is one of the reasons I believe the
problem is Registry related.
Would it be sensible to remove all 2007 components from the Registry with
the CleanUp tool or have I got it all wrong??
Many thanks for your assistance.

The windows installer cleanup utility removes the registry entries
associated with the installer. Then a reinstallation of Office2007 should
correct this problem.
NB Should have asked earlier; You dont have a Office2007 trial, that came
prinstalled do you? If so this should have been uninstalled *prior* to
installing any version of Office.

Hi DL,
I tried a lot of different solutins but kept coming back to the same result
- I could not get Office 2003 to run without constantly reinstalling...
SO I BIT THE BULLET!
I backed up as much data as I could and then recovered the C: drive to the
factory configuration - the laptop is only 2 weeks old and the process worked
perfectly.
I removed the 2007 version of Office Student that had been installed by the
OEM and then installed Office 2003 Professional from the original CD -
installed SP2 from CD - then copied over Outlook.pst - and everything worked
great except for the EULA popping up everytime I started an application -
which I was prepared to accept but I read a KB article on this site that
showed me the way to resolve - which I have done.
Everything is now working fine and I would like to thank Peter & DL for
helping me in the first place. I now am a "happy bunny" and a lot wiser.
Thanks again,
Frank
