Hi,
We have an Excel 2003 file used for somewhat complex calculations that has
been developed over many years and which contains Visual Basic macros and
ActiveX.
This file was sent to a person who is running Excel 2007 to make some text
edits. No changes were made to the macros or ActiveX. The only changes that
were made were to text description fields. The person editing in Excel 2007
simply opened the file, made the text edits and then saved. As far as we
could tell, it was still in the 2003 format because the extension was still
..xls.
When the file was sent back to a user who still has Excel 2003, the Excel
2003 user received an error stating, "Microsoft Office Excel has encountered
a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The
information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Office Excel can try
to recover it for you."
The Excel 2003 user selected the option "Recover my work and restart
Microsoft Office Excel". After restart, a dialog box indicated the repairs
made to the file. The dialog box stated, "Errors were detected in
'filename.xls', but Microsoft Office Excel was able to open the file my
making the repairs listed below. Save the file to make these repairs
permanent." The repairs listed were:
- "Lost Visual Basic project."
- "Lost ActiveX controls".
Note that the Excel 2003 user had the Excel 2007 compatiblity plug-in
installed, but I'm not sure why this would make a difference anyway, given
that the file started out in the 2003 format and was saved to the 2003 format.
The other thing we tried was to have the Excel 2007 user use the "Save As"
option and specifically select the "Excel 97 - 2003" format, instead of just
clicking "Save" which appeared to default to that format anyway. This made no
difference.
Does anyone have a fix for this other than having to start from scratch and
repeat the edits in Excel 2003? Doing this would represent several hours of
lost work.
Thanks,
DougV.
