vlookup format differences

I often use vlookup on sets of data that originate from
different sources and come with different formatting.
These are numeric & alpha-numeric part number strings.
Often the different formats will bring back N/A with
vlookup because of format. Is there a "sure" & quick way
to change/match formats to correct situation.
