vlookup on close file

WHat is the syntax to use vlookup - to gett data from a closed spreadsheet
called my.xls from a tab call sheet1.

sorry Dan/mama to tag on to your answer with a question...but what if you
have in indirect function to make it go to the right sheet?....i've heard
that you can you indirect if the other file is open....
