VM Ware

Alex

Hi,

I do quite a bit if testing/training/demo with Ms Project
2002 and 2003 server and I have been toying with the idea
of usinf VM ware as I have attended breifings where this
has been used. The trouble is is that I do not know too
much about it. Can anyone give me a quick run through of
the following -

What are the benifits when using/demoing MSP?

What VMWare is avaible?

What iVMWare is recommended through experience?

Is there another alternative that anyone would recommend?

Thanks

Alex

Alex:

Personally, I like VMWare, however Microsoft has bought the Connectix
virtual pc produce and will be using this to build their demo images, so you
might be best served to go that route.

Alex,
Gary is quite right - if you're looking at the long term, using Virtual
PC (the old Connectix product) is the way to go. You can get a trial
size at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/. We've been using
VMWare here for awhile though and have created images using VMWare 4 and
Project 2003 Server. The overall advantage is having the complete server
environment in a virtual image which is ideal for demos. The ability to
recycle the demo environment to its startup state every time (without
having to reload backups etc.) is a godsend if you've got to do
presentations on a regular basis.
Remember, for Project2003, you'll want a Windows 2003 Server image with
Windows Sharepoint Services, Office 2003 (or XP) and SQL Server and then,
of course, Project Pro and Project Server. (It's about a 4GB image in
VMWare)
Either product has its advantages but since you can't yet buy Virtual PC
from Microsoft (and can no longer buy it from Connectix) you've got to
either go with VMWare for the short term or use the free trial size.

Alex,
in addition to the replies you've got, please remember that you need an OS
licence for each virtual machine, too, and not only application licences for
for the SQLServer, ProjectServer and ProjectPro.
