W2002 and W97 on the same computer

I'm getting on well with Word 2002, but due to a few problems, I'd like to
be able to run a copy of W97 too. I have a copy on another PC that I want to
remove so that I can put it on my PC with Word 2002 on. Are there any
problems with installing two different version on the same PC? Can I install
W97 when W2002 is already installed, or is it better to remove W2002, put
W97 on, then put W2002 on?

If you put them both on the machine - which you can by installing them in
separate folders - then there will be some cross contamination that could be
an issue. I would suggest that you arrange a dual boot installation and run
each in its own operating system.

Thanks for your reply Graham. Hmm, tricky. I don't really want a dual boot
installation. What sort of cross contamination occurs?

I'll leave others to highlight the range of problems, but the most obvious
will be that the version you use will grab the file associations for itself.
For me there would be the additional issues of shared templates. If you
don't like the idea of a dual boot, Charles alternative suggestion is a good
one - had I been able to think of the name of that program (age rearing its
head again) I would have suggested it myself.

There should not be a need to install both unless you are providing support
for users with both. It would be simpler all round to address the
unidentified issues you are experiencing.

My problem with W2002 is with documents written with W97 which have float
over text objects or text boxes. If I try to modify such a document in W2002
(with Tools Options Save set to "Disable features intorduced after..."
Microsoft Word 97), when I try to save the document, even if I haven't
changed the float over text objects themselves, W2002 puts up a popup saying
that some of the objects may move, and sure enough they do, generally to the
top of the page. Is there a work-around for this? I need the documents in
W97 format since other people with W97 need to read and edit them.

Does this occur without the disable feature option set? I have no Word 97
documents of this type with which to check - and in any case I'm running
Word 2003 at present. This sounds like a question for the
Word.drawing.graphics newsgroup.

The problem does not occur without the disable feature option set. I'll take
your advice and post it in the graphics newsgroup. Thanks for your help.
