Want Just Outlook - Do I need whole Office Update?

I have an old, but servicable version of Office (97 I think) - but I want an
updated version of Outlook - at least 2003 - can I get just Outlook? And
does Microsoft update that for free?

you can buy a copy of outlook 2007 but you'll have the best experience if
you get the entire suite.
