Want out of office capability without Exchange Server

M

Mick

It is very irritating to be unable to set an out of office message to let
clients know that I cannot pick up their e-mails just because we don't have a
Microsoft Exchange Server. Surely it should not be beyond the wit of MS
personnel to overcome the problem. Could it be that they don;t want to? Do
they want Exchange servers to take over the world?

Incidentally, this text is too small!

Out of Office, even with Exchange, is *not* a function of your mail client.
You don't have to have Outlook, or even your own workstation, to use Out of
Office with Exchange - the *server* handles it.

Ask your ISP if they offer this feature, as they're the ones who host your
mail on their servers. I know Earthlink offers it -

Your only other option is to use rules. Note that this means leaving Outlook
open, and connected to the internet, for the duration of your absence, which
is why many people don't like it. Also, you will be replying to every
spammer who emails you successfully - which may increase your spam volume.
This is true for Out of Office as well, which is one of the reasons OOF to
the Internet is disabled in Exchange by default.

Re text size - I don't know what it looks like in the web interface to the
newsgroups or whether you can change it in your browser text size view
settings. However, you might consider using a newsreader like Outlook
Express or Forte Agent rather than the web interface - it's a lot easier to
do nearly everything there, including searching, which is always a good idea
to do before you post, as well as mark messages to be watched, and filter
based on replies to your posts.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like.

Perhaps the wit of MS Personnel is not the limiting factor...
