Warning! SP1 upgrades Entourage Identity

D

Diane Ross

After applying SP1, when you open Entourage, your database will be upgraded.
This is a lengthy process. Once Entourage has upgraded your database, you
will be unable to open it in a previous Entourage 2008 version. You will get
an error "This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage", if
you ever use "Remove Office" and re-install without updating. For this
reason, I suggest that you make a backup copy of your Identity in case for
any reason you install SP1 and want to revert back to 12.0.1.

This was covered in the Entourage Help Blog entry:

Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) released

Dear Diane, yes, and I would have wanted to be informed by Microsoft
in advance (Why didn't they include a "Read Me First" file in the
update package?), in order to have done a backup of my email database
before installing the upgrade. Thanks to God, all went OK, but they
were chances that it could have been in the wrong way.

I have no control over whether MSFT includes a Read me, but you can count on
the Entourage Help Blog to inform you. Subscribe using RSS and you'll be
notified. It's all free.

After applying SP1, I could open NOTHING. After attempting fixes suggested on MacFixIt to no avail, I reinstalled Office from orig. Where are the orig entourage email files kept? Would like to replace the old info. Thanx.

Did your Identity upgrade after you applied the SP1 updater? If yes, then
until you apply the SP1 updater, it will not open.

I suggest checking out this article on problems with SP1. Reverting to the
original RTM version is not advised.

I have reinstalled Office 2008 without SP1. It updated my identity and had to reinstall all the info. I have since found a backup I didn't know I had. Can I still switch the old database or will it cause problems?

As long as the database was not upgraded? Was this a 2008 Identity or a 2004
Identity.

You really need to get Entourage upgraded. There are many fixes in SP1 that
you will want. Not upgrading is only going to cause you problems down the
line.

It was a 2008 identity which was upgraded from 2004. After reinstalling, I configured everything from scratch. As far as the fixes in SP1, I never had any of the problems discussed with Office. It always ran smooth. Upgrading MS is almost as bad as upgrading Apple. Seems to create more problems than its worth.

I'm totally lost. Are you reverting back to Entourage 2004 or an earlier
version of Entourage 2008?

I highly recommend that you resolve your install of SP1 rather than trying
to revert.

Reverted back to 2008 without SP1. With SP1 I cannot open Entourage or anything else in office. I had no problems using this version. The only thing losty is my orig identity.
