watermark does not appear in Word 2003

I have inserted a Picture watermark (from a jpeg file) into a Word 2003
documnet using the usual method. The watermark does not appear even in print
layout or print preview mode. Please help.

On the Print tab of Tools | Options, do you have "Drawing objects" checked?

Yes it is. I believe I figured this out. The watermark appears when I uncheck
"Washout". The image created by my graphic artist was already washed out.
Thanks for your help!

Graphic artists often have no clue how Word works. Sometimes you can educate
them; sometimes you have to work around them.
