The "Printed Watermark" command in Word 2002 and above makes it very easy to
insert a watermark, but, like many other "user friendly" features in Word,
it is more of a challenge to customize because the user doesn't know how it
is done. In older versions, where you had to create a watermark manually, at
least you knew how to do it, undo it, redo it, etc.
Even though Word is creating it for you, the watermark is still just a
graphic (or WordArt) anchored to the header paragraph. If you have only one
header in the document, then you'll have the watermark on every page. To
have some pages different, you have to have more than one header. There are
several ways to accomplish this:
1. If you want a watermark only on the first page (or on every page but the
first), check the box for "Different first page" on the Layout tab of Page
Setup.
2. If you want the watermark only on some other page in the document, you
will need to create a separate section for that page (Insert | Break | Next
Page before and after it).
Once you have separate headers (either a Header in two or more separate
sections or a separate Header and First Page Header), you can copy/paste or
delete the watermark to/from the appropriate headers. You must be in the
header pane (View | Header and Footer) in order to work with the watermarks.
