Web importing problem

D

Don Culp

After uninstalling FP-98 and then reinstalling to a different disk, I
imported a web from a disk. This web had operated correctly before
uninstalling and reinstalling FP. However, there are now at least two
problems:

1. In the Explorer Navigation view, the only thing that is shown is the home
page. Do I have to manually rebuild the navigation links or is there some
way to import these? (Note: the paths in the Folders view look OK.)

2. All of the Explorer\Web settings\Parameters that are used for Component
Substitution are missing.

Thanks,
Don Culp

You needed to publish the web to retain component features, importing will never retain them.

I don't understand. In order to re-establish the navigation links between
pages, do I have to import a published web or do I need to publish the web
that I already imported? Or maybe I'm missing something?

Also, to clarify: the imported web is one had been created in FP-98 before I
uninstalled FP.

Thanks,

You need to publish the web. Importing will not bring in shared borders and
navigation structure, as well as other files/folders.

OK, maybe I'm not approaching this correctly. What I need to do is to get an
existing FP web into FP Explorer with everything intact.

Maybe instead of importing an FP web I need to open the FP web. The desired
web is located in folder "H:\FP\server\content\krell". When I try to open
this web, I don't see it listed under "Open an existing Front Page web".
Therefore I click on "More
webs", which has a dialog box "Select a web server or disk location" which
shows "krell-1" (the name of the computer). When I type
"H:\FP\server\content\krell" into this dialog box I get an error message:

"The folder 'H:\FP\server\content\krell' is contained by a server-based
Front Page web. To access this web you must use the http:// URL for the web
server."

I tried http://krell-1\H:\FP\server\content\krell but this was some kind of
a small demo web, not the actual web located at
"H:\FP\server\content\krell".

What do I need to type in the "Select a web server or disk location" dialog
box in order to open the web from folder "H:\FP\server\content\krell".

Thanks,
Don Culp

In IE browse to the home page of the web (krell or whatever) and try File Edit w/ FP to see where it is opening from

Or open IIS and see the properties of the local server web you are trying to work with

Don,

You would have to open the web via http on a machine that still has a web server and FP extensions
and then publish to the new location, or if the only option is to use the import function, then you
will have redo the shared borders, themes and navigation.

How did the web get on to the H drive?

Is this site publish to a remote web host that has the FP extensions, if so, then you can open it in
FP on the remote server and publish back to your local machine?

Stefan --

The web site opens perfectly in IE with everything in place if I go to
H:\FP\server\content\krell and click on index.htm. The full path shown in
IE is H:\FP\server\content\krell\index.htm. Note that web this is on my
local hard drive, not on the internet.

I don't have any problem opening the individual web pages in FP for editing.
What is missing in FP are the links between pages and, also, the
substitution components.

So how can I get FP to load this web? From Windows Explorer I tried right
clicking on index.htm and then "Open with Front Page Explorer" but nothing
happened.

Where do I find IIS?

Thomas --

My computer has the full version of FP-98, so I assume that it has a web
server and FP extensions. What I don't know is the exact steps needed to
open the web located at H:\FP\server\content\krell. The web site is
obviously still there (see my reply to Stefan); I can open it in IE but I
just don't know how to open it in FP-98.

The web was originally on my C: drive (2GB) but was taking up too much
space. Before uninstalling FP from C: and reinstalling on G:, I copied the
entire C:\FP folder and all subfolders (with webs) to H:, just as a safety
precaution. So now my webs are preserved but I just don't know how to load
them into FP. There must be some way.

Which version of Windows are you running, as the Web Server that is installed with FP98 is not
supported under Windows ME, 2000 or XP.

Also the web server whether it is FP PWS, MS PWS or IIS is always installed in the C Drive.
