web pages only show as files

G'day
I built my web pages in Pub 98 with no problems at all - they published to
the web & worked fine
When I got Publisher 2003 I built a new set of web pages - all worked fine -
I used ftp explorer to upload as per usual but when I viewed the pages in IE7
they only showed as files
I got several friends to try viewing them & all they saw were files not pages
I've built quite a few pages for different sites in Pub 98 with no probs but
cannot do the same in Pub 2003 no matter what I do
Does anyone has any suggestions for me please?
BTW the same thing happens in Frontpage
The only difference I can see is that Pub 98 saves as html & Pub 2003 saves
as xml

Make sure you have your 'home' page titled whatever your host requires for
the default home page, usually index.htm, index.html, default, htm,
default.html, etc. If you don't have that default page, then the site will
display as a list of files and folders, not web pages.

And...Pub 98 default was "index.html" (I think) and when you Publish to the
web with Pub 2003, the default is "index.htm" (plus the index_files folder).
If you have both index.htm and index.html, the browser doesn't know which is
the default file to open. Delete the old Pub 98 html files from the host
server.

G'day DavidF

Thank you for replying
When I rebuilt the pages in Pub 2003, they were completely new pages - text,
graphics etc & it was "only" Pub 2003 files that I ftp'd - none of Pub 98's
were up there to mix things up

I've just had another go & the same thing happens - only shows as files - I
had "completely" rebuilt the pages again before doing so & it was to a
different site/isp

I just cannot see what I'm doing wrong - obviously something but what?

G'day Dan L

Thank you for replying & trying to help me

With Pub 2003, the first page saves as (default) index.pub.htm - is that the
problem?

With Pub 98 the first page saves as (default) index.html

You missed an important difference in how you produce your web pages in Pub
2003. When you produce your web pages in Pub 2003, you use the File >
Publish to the Web....not File > Save As a web page like you did with Pub98.
When you get to the Save dialog in the process, choose "index.htm" as the
file name. And unless you changed the default setting you will get an
"index.htm" file (your home page) and an "index_files" folder that contains
your other pages and supporting graphics and images. You upload both the
index.htm file and the index_files folder INTACT to your host. Pub 98 did
not use a supporting folder and the index.html file was mixed with all the
files.

There are a group of articles here for reference:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/CH062559071033.aspx

Before you upload new files, go to Tools > Options > Web tab and uncheck
"Rely on VML..." and "Allow PNG...". Also delete your old files from the
host. You don't want "index.pub.htm" or any of the other files you uploaded
before.

G'day again DavidF

Again, thank you for taking the time to help me

I have printed off your "fix" so I'll follow that closely when I rebuild the
pages again - which I'll go & do right now

I really appreciate your help
