the microsoft page was last updated in 1978!
Anyone know where stats can be found for more unusual fonts that "many"
computers might have?

Been asked, answered and posted many times today and the last few days.
Check some previous threads, including this one.

There are no "more unusual" fonts than the 3 or 4 basics.

That's it. And even those top 9 or ten aren't all safe, if you exclude
windows users.

| Tom,
| read all the threads, understand about graphics - no to labour the point
ALL
| I'm trying to do is find some statistics as to what "other" fonts people
| tend to have - I wonder for instance what the most used cross platform
font
| is after the famous top nine or ten that are "safe"

I don't use anything other than Arial and Times for websites. Why bother
using *fancy fonts* when the target audience may not have the font I've
used?

in which case the computer uses the a default font (to replace one it doesn't
have) anyway (like courier or Times (New) Roman).

I hear you all and still find myself wanting to find out what are common
fonts. I wonder if there's a survey somewhere? Can't find much googling...
I guess it's trying to push the boundaries - if for instance I happen to
love "Bauhaus", but find that "einstein" might be on 60% of modern machines,
and "bauhaus" on only 40%, "einstein" might get the nod - that's because I
know that all my potential visitors keep software up to date.

As my chemistry book used to say - "if man were to do nothing until he could
do it perfrectly he would do nothing at all" - anyway I'm working as a
cranky artist now...(g)

There is no real way to determine this, the best you could do is to click
the link below to my site:

http://www.ycoln-resources.com/resources/misc/webfonts.htm

and then follow the links to common applications that users may have
installed and what default fonts are normally installed by those
applications.

I have SCADS of fonts on my system (seems to be about 689) and I have
Bauhaus but not Einstein.

My name is JoAnn and I'm a font-aholic.

That's great Thomas, very useful, thanks.
One question, if someone upgrades say win98 to XP, or Office ?? to Office
2000 and then to 2003, or anything Adobe, do the fonts tend to stay on the
machine from the older versions??
If that's so, then I might throw caution to the wind and use Bauhaus93 or
Lucida Handwriting (occasionally!!!) and have lots of people read them
correctly and others see them as "default"
Seems if enough people do that then slowly grinding changes will occur ?(and
yes, I know, web design get even worse than it is! )

As long as a user upgrades and does delete the existing application, then
yes the fonts would remain. However the users later reformats and only
installs the current version, then...

Really if you want to make sure everyone see your font choice, use the
font(s) for headings only and as GIF images, and the use standard fonts for
body copy or create content in PDF format.

Keep in mind you font choice may not be easy for everyone to read, depending
on the page background and font color you choose, as fonts the look good on
paper and print do not always look good on-screen, which is why MS has
create a set of fonts specifically for the web.
