Web Space problems and "_vti_cnf" folders

D

Dennis Blondell

I have an ongoing problem resolving web space usage with my hosting service
and web site size reported by FP2K. I have contacted my hosting service
about the difference and they replied with:
"...FrontPage maintains a stack of other "private" information to assist it
in managing and
updating your site... "

"This is a characteristic of the application software you have chosen to
use, and is not related to web-hosting services, which of course bill you
strictly for the disk space you have used. Put simply, FrontPage does not
accurately report the amount of space the site uses."

They calculated that the web space used was made up of:
"2.97 MB Normal documents"
"1.53 MB FrontPage private files"

I have the web set to display hidden folders and can't find where the other
"private" information is stored. However when I check my localhost through
Explorer I find heaps of _vti_cnf folders containing copies of web files.
They are causing my so many problems so how can I get rid of them. I have
tried clearing FP temp files with no help and supposedly if I just delete
them, FP creates them again.

I was thinking of ordering FP2003 cos it looks cool but maybe I will just
have to learn to use Dreamweaver MX if 2003 has the same problem as 2K:-(

There must be a way of getting rid of these files....

Cheers

The information in the _vti folders is required if you are using the http
publishing method to a server with FP server extensions. Those files are
what manage the web site.

Thanks for the quick response Tom

I do use http, so does that mean that if I use ftp those enjoying _vti
folders won't be needed? Do I have to delete the web one line to get rid of
them once and for all, then start using ftp? I really want any non essential
folders to disappear and give me more space to use.

Cheers

To not have the _vti folders on the remote server, you would have to have
your host remove the FP extensions from your account.

The _vti folders are never published between server/locations, then are
created by the FP extensions on the server/location you are publishing to.

I've used FrontPage and am aware of this issue. I don't like it very much
but for me, if the cost of easy administration is a larger site I just
accept it as a cost of doing business. server space and bandwidth are
pretty cheap anyway these days.

Thanks Thomas, that makes it clear. Still makes me annoyed with FP as 30% +
of junk files is not really acceptable. As I asked Chris, does FP2003 still
have the same way of dealing with FP extensions? I may just have to remove
extensions with sites that I am pushing to the size limits. I am moving more
and more away for using components anyway.

Also, if I can ask you too, I am thinking of getting my own multiple domain
hosting service (reseller plan) and have more flexibility for my clients
sites, space etc. You have any suggestions (needs to support .net)?

Thanks for your response Chris and I hope FP2003 has a better way of dealing
with these issues.

In New Zealand hosting is sill on the more expensive side around $40 per
month. Clients are mostly small businesses and have much cash for a site and
hosting.

I am thinking of getting my own multiple domain hosting service (reseller
plan) and have more flexibility for my clients sites, space etc. You have
any suggestions (needs to support .net)?

1. You can host anywhere in the world.
2. FP2003 will be the same, as it uses the FP2002 extensions.

Are you using a FP Search component?
- if so that's probably the largest "extra" File FP creates as it indexes all your files in your web
