I just noticed that anyone can use FP and open my webpages and edit them and
then save. How do I control who can open and edit my pages?

(I am hosting my pages from XP pro computers and i have full control on
modifying setting.)

Thanks in advanced.

They normally will have to have your username and password to access your
files and host site.

You didn't understand. I don't care about "normally" all i know if that
anyone can open my site and edit it. How can I restrict who can open my site
in FP?

"Save" them where??

Back to the server, or only on "their" machine.

If "back to the server" you have a real problem.
If only to their machine, you can't stop it.

No need to get hateful. Users have to have a password in order to save
changes to YOUR site located on the server. Anyone can copy your stuff to
their own machine and save it.

Guess you have to deal with that problem if it gets out of hand.

Jules, sorry about the previous message. I didn't mean the way you took it.
It's not going well here. sorry again about that.

But i can publish it to the web and it doesn't ask me for a passwor or
username.

Steve "Back to the sever" that's what i'm experiencing.... i can publish to
the server without it asking me for a password.

Does it ask you for your un/pw when you open it the normal way? File | Open WEb/Site? If it does then clicking on Edit With Frontpage will also prompt for a un/pw to be able to actually edit the site. However, you can always open a site with FP even it it's not your's...but you can't edit or save the changes on the server without un/pw.

Besides, in most cases all ya have to do it View Source to "borrow" a web page.

Then you need to contact your host and have them reset the un/pw. But you should have someone else try it first and see if its really unprotected (dont post the url here...have someone y ou know try it first)

M

Mr. Know Nothing

No, it never ask me for a un/pw. I know anyone can "borrow" my site but i
don't want them to change it on my server.

M

Mr. Know Nothing

when you say "host' who do mean? I'm hosting my web site from home on my own
machine. If that is what you mean how do i reset my own password?

You will need to configure IIS or whatever web server you
are using. It is not FP controllable. 1st thing you can do
is change the permissions on the folder where it is stored,
so that only you can write or modify. Iusr_guest should be
read only

Better have your host lock it up then.

Mr. KN,
You're right it's not secure.

THanks i saw that you posted on one of my other questions for someone else to
help and i appreaciate that. Up to know i htink you are the one that i got
the most help from keep up the good work. I'll let you know when i get it
fixed

Mike, I checked in IIS in the sites properties and on the folder itself an
both say that they are read only. Where and what exactly do I change to read
only?

Yer welcome..dunno if I helped much.

I removed what I added to your index page.

You may want to organize your structure for sanity's-sake...move your images to the images folder...leave the root just for pages and scripts. But that's really not important at the moment.

IMHO
If you are attempting to run a server from your home on Windows XP Pro for the limited 10 connections you may get (that's not 10
users)
- and don't have a hardware firewall and software firewall set up correctly
- plus the knowledge of IIS and Security Settings / Permissions under Windows XP
Your PC is a disaster waiting to happen
- a "friendly" hacker will be along any moment now

PS
Security / Permissions under IIS and your localhost site has nothing to do w/ your "folders" being read only

I am well aware of the limitations of running a site on win XP pro, that is
why I ordered a real server yesterday. So how do i stop someone from editing
my site?
