One method, by no means the only method, is to submit your site to google or
yahoo or altavista or which ever ones you choose.

They register the site and index all the keywords, descriptions and whatever
makes up the database that people search which will then find your site.

Don't expect your site to come up at number one on the first day .....if your
site is for example, about Formula One Motor Racing....be prepared for 200,0000+
search results ('hits') on the same subject, and your site might be listed as
198,000....

If you narrow the search down and your page is say about Michael Schumacher i.e.
your site might stilll be about F1 motor racing in general, but more specifically
a particular driver in the sport, then that might narrow it to 50,000 - getting
closer to what people want to find. Depends on what people search for - they
might want sites about F1 racing generally or on Michael Schumacher specifically
so you have a better chance of your site being listed higher.

Using Meta tags "keywords" and "description" is a start, but search engines also
'scan' your pages for other keywords in the text/body of your pages.

Search engines also 'crawl' the web regularly looking for new sites, so chances
have it that eventually your site will turn up on search engines anyway.

The key to google is page rank, and the key to that is
quantity and quality (page rank) of incoming links. The web
site I do has less than 2000 hits in less than a year and I
now have a page rank of 4. Most of this happened after some
links to my site were on placed on some other sites having
ranks of 5 and better
