Weird error - cannot open document as Read-Only

Here is the problem - I cannot open word docs from the network as
"Read-only," either from the dialog box or from VBA. It opens
normally no matter what I choose. I can open local documents as
read-
only. Any ideas?

I posted in the general group microsoft.public.word.docmanagement but
it was suggested I post here...Thanks!
