Weird error in document

I

Irving Hill

I have been sent a document of approximately 66 pages.
However, when I open it Word says it is repaginating the
document and it hangs at approximaetley page 17500! Has
anyone seen this before. Product is word 200 SP3 on
Windows XP SP1 + all hotfixes.

Cheers

It might be worth finding out what printer driver the sender used to format
the document and install the same driver and set that as default while you
open the document. The document is reformatting for *your* driver, and while
I have not seen anything this bad myself, I could envisage such a problem
occurring.

Hi Graham

Thanks for the reply. I've never heard of such a thing
but it is worth noting that the document does this as
soon as it is opened not when I try to print. Would Word
do this even befor a print command was sent?

Cheers

This type of problem is usually associated with a corrupt table in the
document. Hit ESC as soon as the document opens (to stop repagination), then
switch to Normal view and go to Tools | Options | General and switch off
background repagination. This should buy you enough peace to examine the
document for problems. I'm vague on the details but seem to recall the cause
is graphics anchored to tables, too many "Keep with next" rows in a table,
etc. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm and "WD2002:
Error Message When You Attempt to Stop Repagination" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292161.
