weird formatting issue

All of a sudden I'm having a formatting issue with my Word 2003. When I
highlight a particular section to format, the whole document formats. But
then if I click Undo, it reverts, however leaving the section I wanted to
change reformatted.
Example:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

If I want to change the color of the second sentence to RED, I higlight that
sentence, click the font button and choose RED. I then get:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

Then if I click Undo, I get:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

I have the same symptoms with other formatting options, i.e. if I click the
BOLD button, the UNDERLINE button.....

This has never happened before and has me stumped, any ideas???

Appreciate any assistance!!

Thanks - ST
