Weird gray brackets

Lately I've had non-printing gray brackets show up around
text that has been copied and pasted elsewhere in the
document. The brackets only show up on the screen and they
don't really do anything except bug me. It doesn't always
happen, and when it does, it will do some other odd
things. For example, if I copy three words from an eight-
word bullet point, it will bracket the entire eight words.

Has anyone seen this, and can you tell me how to turn it
off?

These could be bookmarks. See if "Bookmarks" is checked on the View tab of
Tools | Options. Now *why* you would be getting bookmarks is beyond me.

Many thanks, Suzanne. I don't know why the copy function
is, at times, inserting bookmarks either, but unchecking
the bookmarks option did the trick.
