Running 2003 with SP1, long time user of Outlook, I now find that Outlook
"has encountered a problem and needs to close" tile suddenly appears
immediately upon opening the application. In the tile there is a box, ticked
by default, offering to "Restart Outlook".

This simply produces another 'error' tile.

I have used the 'scanpst' tool on the data file which found errors and fixed
them, but the problem remained.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled Office completely, but I still have the
problem. Detect and repair runs cheerfully in Word, and from the install
disc, re-assuring me that the 'repair is complete', but I STILL have the
problem.

Any ideas how to solve this? Is it pointing at a system fault, rather than
the app itself? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Perhaps your outcmd.dat file is corrupt.

Thank you Gordo.

Interestingly, no "outcmd.dat" file present on Drive C in any location. I
have large amount of storage on 3 HDDs, and found one dated June 2004 on
another drive.

A bit of a basic solution, but I thought I would try 'planting' that in the
right folder on C. Unfortunately the behaviour is unchanged. Outlook
opens, waits a couple of seconds, then puts up the "problem" tile. One
other change is that now, before it falls over, it asks me if I want to
import the e-mail accounts which I have [today] set up in OE6 a second
before the tile appears. Very peculiar.

Event Viewer has this -
<quote>
Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.6353.0, stamp 408f2937,
faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.1362, stamp 4049346b, debug? 0,
fault address 0x0003fbd1.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

I am at something of a loss with this. Other suggestions would be most
welcome.
