What do I look for in a hosting service?

I went to HostSave's community forum (HostSave is my web host), and
found that the publishing timeout problem isn't unique. A few months
ago, someone got into my site and a bunch of other people's sites on
that host site and embedded codes that forced open a porn site window
and/or tool bar. I think it is time to move my site to another host.

I need help though because I don't really know what criteria to look for
in hosting companies. I don't care about the number of e-mail accounts,
having a database, or any of the fancy stuff such as advanced scripting.
I just want a host service that works appropriately and reliably,
trouble free, and can deliver pages to viewers in a timely fashion.

So what would be an ideal FrontPage 2002 hosting environment?

Thanks!
Barb

I would strongly suggest that you use a 'local' company... one where you can
walk in their door and get to know them. ... a company you can easily call
and they know immediately know who you are. This has worked so much better
for me ... to the point where I almost insist that my clients use them. I
save so much time with any support issues.

On the FP lists I frequent people put forward 1and1.com which is a FrontPage
host and recommened them I myself use a reseller account
(matrixreseller.com ) as I have so many sites it makes better ecomonic
sense.

I wrote an article about what questions you should be asking when looking
for a host...

Tina, thanks for the great information. I read some of it and will go
back to read more.

It sounds like the decision between going for a Unix or Windows server
is based on how or what you want to do, right? I've always been on Unix
servers and wonder if going to a Windows server would be better. Any
opinions on this?

If you need FP server extensions - which offers the functionality for all
those 'advanced scripting and stuff you don't care about' - you'll need a
host which offers the FP server extensions.

Why are you sure any other host will be any less likely to be hacked than
HostSave?

I would stick with unix .. simply because you can do a lot more on the
server level without having to use asp. You can easily use your htaccess for
custom 404's and do 301's which is essential for redirecting and not losing
seo in the process... and other scripting stuff... you can use fpse with
unix so stick with what your used to.

I really like my own host .. it has it's up and downs but they fix stuff
when needed it has huge range of options and is cheap £19 ($35) - a month
for hosting my numerous domains (reseller account) it also means I can help
out friends and relatives with hosting when need be (for free i hasten to
add;) ... it was a bit of a learning curve as you have to do the hard work
yourself ... but i'd recommened it to anyone that has a bunch of their own
sites to host ... if you just have one 1and1.com seems to be the best fp
host around at the moment.. your host does not have to be local ... every
host I've had has been in the states except for one english one ... and I
had the worst them with them (easyspace) being in the uk I don't phone my
hosts but use the ticket system intially then use email ... it works ok for
me... I've never found myself having to use the phone ...
