What do I use to write pages for a book for publication.

I have almost finished a book and I need to type it out and print it from my
computer. I know nothing about computer formats. Can you please help me. If

What program do you plan to use for the typing?
This will be helpful if you plan to use Word. Publisher isn't really suitable
for long documents.
