To me, it's a tilde tho' that might only be appropriate when it is over
another a letter. It does have have the meaning "approximately equal to"
or "about" tho' mostly. I might write "The temperature was ~80F". More
often, I use it to initiate an autocorrection as I recently mentioned,
like 80~F to get 80°F in Word.
