Objective is a fancy word for goal. They want to know what your goals are in
seeking a job. What kind of job do you want, and what do you want to be
doing. The objectives should be congruent with other facts in your resume.
For example, it's silly to say that you want to be a rock musician if your
resume doesn't provide evidence that you can actually rock.

Use the cover letter to say exactly what job you are applying for (often, a
company will be advertising multiple slots, and the resume reader needs to
know which slot you are targeting) and why you think they should hire you.
The cover letter should not repeat things that are already in the resume.
The resume is a set of facts. The cover letter shows the correspondence
between those facts and the job for which you are applying.

Good luck.
