Portable Document Format - it means it can be read on any computer with any
operating system that has a pdf reader.

In addition to that, it is normally not editable, unless the computer has
the fairly expensive and fairly complicated Acrobat software installed (not
to be confused with the free Acrobat reader....)

Its a format created origonally by Adobe, used in their Acrobat application.
Files created retain their layout in whatever sys they are viewed and can be
rendered uneditable.

The need for Acrobat was more or less true at one time, but there are other
ways to get an editable document from a PDF now. Check out some of these --

Or GhostScript or pdf2text. Or even your favorite hex editor in many
cases.
All these assume PDF files generated from PostScript source. PDF files
can also contain scanned images. In those cases, OCR software could
pull the text out, but editing the PDF file would be much more
difficult.
