Hi Shuma,

The original written use by Bill Gates is said to have been
as 'Micro-soft' (from microcomputer software) in 1975 as the name for a partnership with Paul Allen and for the BASIC language
porting they developed. The hyphen was dropped when it was filed as a tradename, Microsoft, in Nov 1976.

Some folks might say it stands for things like money, power, greed, control <g>, others might cite how the MS products have changed
our work and everyday lives over the last 30 years <g>. Others simply wouldn't have thought much about it one way or another :)

Have you ever heard of Google?
The name was coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted
to microcomputer software. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the '-'
disappeared on 3/2/1987 with the introduction of a new corporate identity
and logo. The "slash between the 'o' and 's' [in the Microsoft logo]
emphasizes the "soft" part of the name and conveys motion and speed

Frequently Offered Answers on alt.architecture:

1. What architecture school should I go to? [Common Variant: How good is
the University of 'X'?]

It's up to you. [Variant: "LOL!!!!"]

2. Can someone help me with my homework?

Nah. See question/answer #9 and stop asking others to do your work.

3. I'm working on a project for school. It's about 'X'. Will yo
please send me information about 'X'?

No. See #2. If it's a paper, then the research is already published.
If it's a studio project, then anything we send you is cheating on your
part.

4. Where can I find free plans/design work/engineering calcs on the
internet?

http://www.alltheplansintheworld.com/instantarchitect/egan.html
http://www.freearchitecture.com/
http://www.allthefreecadsoftware.com/instantplans/

5. What CAD program is best/should I buy?

Try the alt.cad newsgroup. We're pretentious artistes at
alt.architecture. We also all hate the software we use, but won't use
anything else, either. But if yours is anything different that we use,
we'll make sure you're abused for it.

6. Is architecture a good career choice?

LOL! We can only hope so.

7. Am I being overcharged by my architect?

LOL! We can only hope so.

8. What does everyone think of this famous architect's work?

AUGH!

9. Why should I hire an architect when I can draw the plans with
[insert name of extremely cheap drafting software here] on my own
computer?

You get what you pay for [or don't pay for--RE: Congressman James
Trafficant's self-defense].

10. Where can I find 'X'?

Leave us alone. Try http://www.google.com instead.

11. What's a good gift for a teenager who wants to be an architect?

Space.

12. Please go to my website.

That's not a question.

13. Why are architects so incompetent?

Only in Hong Kong. They're all good everywhere else.
Usually, it's the clients that are incompetent.

14. May I advertise in alt.architecture?

Only if your name is not Ralph, Anthony or "orangetree". Otherwise, feel
free. But we'll berate you for it anyway.

15. Are all CAPS posts or excessive punctuation marks allowed in
alt.architecture posts?

No. You will be severely mocked and chastened for posting in all CAPS
or for more than (3) consecutive puncutation marks in a single post.

16. I'm a "drive-by" poster - I come and post a question, never to been
seen again. Will you please reply to my email address so I don't have
to come look for your reply?

No. Inevitably your post will begin a long thread, beginning with some
harsh reality. If you can't hack it, don't post the first time. Also
be aware that the long thread will rapidly diverge from the original
post with little redeeming value. Or not.

17. Can you recommend an architect/designer who'll work for virtually
nothing to copy the plan-book plan I have? I only want to change few
things.

No. However, most of us do whole heartedly endorse this firm:
http://www.architectsassociates.net/. You can't go wrong with them.
Better yet, hire them and send the fees to me.
