What happens I don't have a key anymore?

I've been using Office 97 on my dinosaur laptop for
years. When it died I finally bought my first computer in
six years. It came with Word 2002. But I also use Excel
alot. But I can't install it in the new computer from my
old disk since the key is long gone. Is it worhtless now?
I paid a few hundred dollars for this Office 97 Pro back
in 97. It worked great all these years so I don't really
need to get the latest version. Besides I still regaining
my breath from having to shell out for the new computer.
I know the key is to prevent pirating, but what does
someone do in this situation. I have an original disk not
a copy.

You are out of luck since Microsoft no longer supports Office 97 and does
not have any replacement media - that ran out a couple of years ago.

You can always try one of the free options such as OpenOffice.org - I
understand their version of Excel works pretty well. You may have a
learning curve but, if you can't install Office 97 without the key, are
recovering from the purchase of the new PC, and you need a spreadsheet
program, you might as well try it.

if you have the cd but not the key, you could try calling Microsoft for a
replacement key - not sure they will give you one since it's no longer
supported.

I have the same problem with Office 2000 Professional.
Laptop crashed and can not install from orginal CD
without the key number. I had the ID number listed in my
book but it won't accept it. I think it must not be the
Product Number, it only has 22 characters and I need 25.
I have ID 00801-OEM-0081577-74375. I stored CD in slide
in clik case so ID's do get separated. Warning - don't
separate CD from original holder. I am also seeking a
replacement number.

Are you trying to install on the same machine? If not, then please note
that your software is OEM - meaning that it was tied to the machine that
crashed.
