What happens to opened email when account is closed?

I am getting ready to close a DSL service account at my home with which I had
a particular email address associated. I want to continue to use that same
email address with new DSL service at my business provided by the same DSL
provider. The provider is telling me that I need to do something to save any
old email sent to the home location before they close that account and switch
the email address to the business account, or that old email will be lost.
Once the email is opened is it not on my computer for good even though the
home account may be closed? If not, how do I save that old email?

You can choose to leave messages on the server with POP3 and an IMAP account
will leave them on the server.
If it's IMAP you will need to copy the messages locally (don't rely on the
mirrored local copy).
Best to check with your provider again and check your account types and
settings.
