What-if analysis - versions

E

Erkki Piipari

Hi there.

We are going to use versions for saving projects after a
scope change and furthermore for saving the projects eg
per quarter.

In EIF System Design Guidelines says : "Simulation
versions are those that are used to evaluate different
approaches to a project, such as adding more resources,
changing the project flow, etc."

But I am wondering: Only the published version has impact
on the resource usage - so IMO the version analysis does
not produce meaningful results. Documents or hints towards
the proper way to do what-if scenarios would be a great
help and enlighten my day (as the sun's been missing for a
few weeks:).

Thanks inn advance

Project versions give you good what-if analysis at the plan level, but
you're correct that these do not show the impact on the enterprise. To
accomplish what it sounds to me you want to do, you can create an analysis
instance of Project Server on your existing machines and use this to model
sweeping changes to the portfolio. By restoring the production database to
the new instance, you can see the impact of changes across the entire
enterprise when you make them.
