what is ext .xif and how can I convert it to word .txt or .jpg if.

someone sent me family history and pictures that were scanned and they just
come through with lots of little boxes and the name Xerox in the middle. I
requested information from the sender but have received no reply as yet. I
thought perhaps someone out there might know what I have to do.
