What is Microsoft Update?

CJust reinstalled Office 2003 Professional Edition on replacement laptop w/XP
Pro.

When I go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/FX101321101033.aspx

My eyes roll back in my head.

1 -I've clicked By Version on the left for Office 2003 and been presented
with a very long list... must I manually update every single Office 2003 PE
App?

2 - I've clicked "Check for Updates" on the left and been asked to install
Microsoft Update... I have Auto Updates turned on on this machine...
-do I need to install still another application???
-What is Microsoft Update?
-Why won't the Automatic Updates built into XP Pro do the job?

3 - Is there no simple way to just click something that will check the
status of my Office 2003 PE and then update it as needed?

Thanks for any help.

Suspect what you got is a list of optional downloads for Office 2003, not
updates.

Microsoft Update is a replacement for Windows Update. In addition to updates
for your version of Windows, Microsoft Update will also provide updates for
Office 2003 and other Microsoft applications. Microsoft Update is normally
controlled by your setting for Automatic Updates with respsect to how you
choose to install updates. You can also run it manuallly at any time. If you
have a number of pending updates, you may need to run Microsoft Update more
that once. After you are up to date, you can return to using your automatice
setting.

Install Office 2003 Service Pack 3, that should reduce the updates substantially. If all apps were installed and additionally
needing the optional File Converter, Compatibility Pack, and Time Zone Updates it should be close to, but less than 2 dozen
updates(patches and security)
